Akron Roundtable hosting author, professor Stephen Post
WEST AKRON — Stephen Post, author of “Why Good Things Happen to Good People” and professor of bioethics, philosophy and religion at Case Western Reserve University’s School of Medicine, will address the Akron Roundtable luncheon meeting Nov. 15 at 11:45 a.m. at Tangier restaurant, 532 W. Market St.
Post is a recognized expert on the ethical dilemmas of caring for people with dementia. He began writing on the subject of altruism and the spirituality of love at age 16, for which he received honors at St. Paul’s School in New Hampshire. His college focus on the evolution of altruism led to a research assistantship at Cornell Medical School, focusing on the endocrinology of altruism. He completed his Ph.D. at the University of Chicago Divinity School (1983), where he received a “distinction” for his dissertation on unselfish love and human fulfillment, and was elected a University Fellow and taught in the Pritzker School of Medicine.
Post has continued to
focus on the theme of altruism
and love over the course of his career across a variety
of disciplines. During the 1990s, his research on the
dynamics of compassionate love in the lives of people
with dementia and their caregivers resulted in his election
to the Medical and Scientific Advisory Board of Alzheimer’s
Disease International. Post also served on the National
Ethics Advisory Board for the Alzheimer’s Association
and was recognized in 1998 for distinguished service
by its national board. In 2004 he
was elected a Distinguished Fellow
of College of Physicians of Philadelphia.
Post was selected in 2001 as founding president of the Institute for Research on Unlimited Love — Altruism, Compassion, Service by Sir John Templeton. Created with a grant from the Templeton Foundation, the institute facilitates research, writing, conferences and courses at the interface of science, spirituality, health and love for humanity.
Post also has written seven books on love and is the editor of eight books, as well as being editor-in-chief of the Encyclopedia of Bioethics. He lives in Shaker Heights with his wife, Mitsuko, and their two children, Emma and Andrew.
“Why Good Things Happen to Good People” will be available for purchase and signing by Post at the conclusion of his presentation.
