HUDSON — The new Summa Wellness Institute, 5625 Hudson Drive, will host a community open house Nov. 3 from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. The event will showcase the new 65,000-square-foot facility, which features fitness equipment, a natatorium, indoor track, group exercise studios, spinning studio, sports performance clinic, heart-healthy café and more.
BARBERTON — Barberton Citizens Hospital will present a lecture on “Nutritional Supplements: Weighing the Benefits and Concerns,” by Jon Fiume, vice president of retail operations and natural products for Ritzman Natural Health Pharmacies, as part of its lunch-and-learn health lecture series, “Your Health Matters,” Nov. 7 at 11:30 a.m. The series is free and open to the public, with lectures taking place in the ground-floor conference rooms D and E of the hospital, 155 Fifth St. N.E. WEST AKRON — The American Diabetes Association’s Lunch and Learn program will host speaker Roseann Chiurazzi, RN, RD, CDE, Nov. 9 from noon to 1 p.m. at the Akron office, 1815 W. Market St., Suite 108. The topic will be “Eating Healthy During the Holidays.” Light refreshments will be served. The program is open to people with diabetes or caregivers. COPLEY — A program on “Helping Children Cope With Holiday Grief,” for ages 6-12, will be offered Nov. 16 and Dec. 14 from 5 to 6:30 p.m. A corresponding informational group for parents/caregivers also will be presented. Also, “Coping With the Holidays” will be offered for adults Nov. 8 and Dec. 6 from 2 to 4 p.m. or 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Both groups will meet at the Hospice of VNS Care Center, 3358 Ridgewood Road. BARBERTON — Dr. Lee Sprance, of Barberton, recently received a three-year-appointment as cancer liaison physician for the cancer program at Barberton Citizens Hospital. Cancer liaison physicians are an integral part of cancer programs approved by the American College of Surgeons Commission on Cancer (CoC), according to hospital officials. Sprance is among a national network of more than 1,600 volunteer physicians who are responsible for providing leadership and direction to establish, maintain and support their facilities’ cancer program. Sprance is a member of the multidisciplinary cancer committee at Barberton Citizens Hospital.
GREATER AKRON — QuickClinic is partnering with Novartis Vaccines to introduce FluGram, a prepaid influenza vaccination gift-giving program that allows people to reserve influenza vaccinations for themselves and their loved ones while supplies last. Card-holders can visit QuickClinic to receive their influenza vaccination from a health professional. The FluGram can be purchased and redeemed at QuickClinics located in Acme No. 2, 2420 Wedgewood Drive in Ellet; Acme No. 17, 4445 Kent Road in Stow; or at Buehler’s, 179 Great Oaks Trail in Wadsworth. DOWNTOWN AKRON — The trauma center at Summa Health System’s Akron City Hospital has been reverified as a Level 1 trauma center by the Committee on Trauma (COT) of the American College of Surgeons (ACS). Established by the ACS in 1987, the COT’s Verification/Consultation Program for Hospitals promotes the development of trauma centers in which participants provide not only the hospital resources necessary for trauma care but also the entire spectrum of care to address the needs of all injured patients.
DOWNTOWN AKRON — Summa Health System’s Bariatric Care Center has been named an American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery (ASMBS) Center of Excellence. The ASMBS Center of Excellence designation recognizes surgical programs with a demonstrated track record of favorable outcomes in bariatric surgery. To earn a Center of Excellence designation, Summa underwent a series of site inspections during which all aspects of the program’s surgical processes were closely examined and data on health outcomes was collected. Summa and other centers receiving the Bariatric Surgery Center of Excellence designation agree to continue to share information on clinical pathways, protocols and outcomes data.
