Issue No. 24 — Green charter amendment
NEW FRANKLIN — A proposal to rename New Franklin to the city of Portage Lakes will appear before voters in New Franklin on the Nov. 6 General Election ballot. Issue No. 37 is a charter amendment to Article 11.01 of the New Franklin City Charter, approved by voters last year.
Now that a merger between New Franklin Village and Franklin Township is complete and a charter for the city has been adopted, ballot Issue No. 37 authors R.C. Norris and Fred Ford-Smith believe the time is right to address a name change for the new city.
If approved by voters, New Franklin would adopt the change in January 2008.
New Franklin Clerk-Treasurer Kathy Witwer estimated the effort would cost the city about $29,000.
New Franklin Mayor Al Bollas said voter approval of the proposal in November would be followed with an effort to form a merger study commission comprised of residents from both Coventry Township and New Franklin.
