What makes you the best candidate for the position?
“Simply over the past 40

People love and live in Green because they like the
rural atmosphere and the feeling of protection along

What makes you the best candidate

“I am the best candidate
for the position of Green City Council at Large because
I have a shared perspective with the majority of Green

the world to me. I’ve worked since age 16 and
I’ve graduated from college. I’m a homeowner
and I’m concerned about the issues facing our
city.
“The business of city council
is to provide the best quality of life we can for our
neighbors and friends here in Green. I have attended
to this business for 4 years with commitment and integrity.
In these 4 years I’ve gained critical experience.
“I currently serve as Council
President, chair of Finance committee, vice chair Transportation,

actively representing residents, voters and small businesses.
I have been there for residents time and again when
many felt abandoned by their local government. I know
and understand that in America our government belongs
to all of the people, not
just a few. I will commit to being a representative
who will listen to your concerns, represent your interests,
and protect your investment in your homes, businesses
and neighborhoods. I will spend your tax dollars frugally

What makes you the best candidate
for the position?
“I am the best candidate
for this position because I possess valuable experience
and the proper background. Having previously served
on Green City Council as the Ward 2 Representative,
I am thoroughly familiar with the demands and
expectations of this position.
As a long-term resident and a father of two children
that attend Green Schools, I share the same concerns
and values expressed by my fellow neighbors and residents.
My experience as an attorney, and small business owner
have equipped me well to approach complicated problems
with reason and sound judgment. I understand the role
of a city councilperson and respect my obligation to
spend taxpayer funds wisely, and make decisions that
enhance the quality of life for all residents. I understand
that effective leadership often involves making difficult
decisions on sometimes controversial issues. Approaching
these issues with an open mind, and being willing to
listen to the positions of others is important. Being
accessible to constituents and promptly returning telephone
calls were requirements during my previous
term on city council, and these requirements
remain. I understand that the decisions made by our
next mayor and city council will have long-lasting consequences.
I am prepared to serve in this position.”

Intergovernmental & Utilities Committee
Member, Green City Council Environment
& Parks Committee
What makes you the best candidate
for the position?
“I have been involved with
City issues since 2000. I have grown and I have learned.
As a resident, I took my concerns to Council and trusted
they would listen to the facts brought to them and work
to come to a mutually acceptable agreement to solve
the issue. I worked hard to make sure my facts were
gathered and true. I assumed when presented with the
facts, the decision would be apparent. This, however,
was not always the case. Policies, procedures, agendas
clouded the process and that brought frustration to
me. The answer, I thought, was to become part of the
group that ‘made the decisions.’ After my
election, I realized that now I was being asked to make
decisions that affected many individuals and their quality
of life and there was more
to the process than I realized. My job is now harder
because I still believe that
each of us has the right to be heard, each of us has
the right to ask those that work for them to consider
the facts and be fair. I still work through frustration
and do the best I can to ask the tough questions. I
still make sure I have gathered all the facts and confirmed
that they are true. I still grow and learn everyday
on how to help residents. It doesn’t happen quickly,
but I cannot hear concerns and do nothing. My re-election
would allow me to continue to pursue issues that affect
all of us and hopefully come to positive conclusions.”
John Volosen
Personal information
Volosen, 55, is single.
Education
B.A., The University of Akron
(UA), education, 1974
B.S., UA, natural science, 1975
B.S., UA, civil engineering,
1976
M.A., UA, civil engineering,
1977
Experience
Currently, self-employed civil/structural
engineer (20-plus years)
Activities
Worked with citizen advocates
and residents on several zoning issues
What makes you the best candidate
for the position?
“I would be the only Professional
Engineer on Council. As a civil engineer, I have experience
in the design of subdivisions, roads, stormwater management,
and sanitary sewers, as well as experience in building
design. Not only have I engineered projects, I have
also contracted and built them.
“Green is a rapidly growing
City with many active private and public construction
projects. While these projects are intended to promote
business and residential development and to relieve
traffic congestion, they often cause problems due to
design and construction oversights. People have their
property taken by Eminent Domain and are not fairly
compensated, roads are widened and leave driveway problems
for adjacent property owners, drainage problems are
left unaddressed, roads are still not pedestrian friendly,
construction drags on as there is no incentive for contractors
to finish in a timely manner, and the list goes on.
Among the candidates, I am uniquely qualified to address
these problems and aid citizens in their resolution.
“While we all may not face
these issues, we all pay taxes. I am prepared to say
‘no’ when incentives and tax breaks offered
to business and developers provide little return for
citizens.”
