COPLEY — Bako Landscaping is celebrating 50 years in business this year.

Stonework and patio installation is one of the services offered by Bako Landscaping, which is marking 50 years this year.
Sandor and Kathy Bako founded the Copley company in 1962 just a few years after they fled Hungary. Current owner Susan Kocsis, their daughter, said her now-retired father started the business part-time while working in the tire industry in Akron.

“He found that he was getting really busy, and so he started doing that part time and this full time,” Kocsis said. “He started a nursery and doing landscaping and lawn maintenance also.”

Kocsis said she started working for her father in 1994 on general labor projects. As the company flourished, she eventually moved to the business side.

Now Kocsis and her husband operate the company, which provides spring and fall cleanups, lawn installation, patio and walkway construction and routine lawn maintenance to customers.

The business is about evenly split between lawn maintenance and landscaping contracts, Kocsis said.

“We are working on anything from planting trees to making borders, doing new around-the-house landscaping and improvements,” she said. “You can come with a dirt yard and we can do everything to get it done.”

Kocsis said the company’s employees are skilled at helping homeowners with plant selection.

“A lot of people want plants that are tolerant of the area, hardy plants that are low maintenance because everybody is busy,” she said. “People really like color. They like new, unusual plants and perennials that give their landscape an original look.

“There are so many varieties and so many options,” she added. “We really try to landscape so that in winter you will also have some nice color.”

Staff members are trained and the business is part of trade associations that provide education and up-to- date information, Kocsis said.

When working with a homeowner, Kocsis said the company makes it a priority to listen to what they are looking for.

“People are educated and they know what they like,” she said.

They invite customers to share photos they find in magazines or online for inspiration.

In addition, Bako Landscaping has a detailed website with photos of many of its completed projects, Kocsis said.

The 15-acre nursery is open to clients, who can walk through to see what they like, Kocsis said.

“If people are looking for plants, they can make an appointment, and we can walk them through to pick plants and tag the ones they want,” she said.
