DOWNTOWN AKRON — The late Anthony Gorant was named the beneficiary of the annual Cliff Skeen Lifetime Achievement Award May 24.

The posthumous honor was presented during Summit County’s Employee Recognition Day ceremony. Toby Gorant accepted the award in honor of her husband, who died in September at age 80, county officials said. Her daughter, Ellen Lishewski, and grandson Blaize Lishewski also attended.

The Cliff Skeen Award is presented to someone who has committed their career to public service. The recipient must have given diligently to Summit County community services, according to county officials.

They added Gorant worked for 42 years for Ohio Edison and FirstEnergy, then an additional 15 years for Akron General Medical Center as senior vice president of Community Affairs. He also was part of the Akron Charter Review Commission, the Akron Planning Commission, Akron Public Schools, the Akron Regional Development Board, the Akron Symphony Orchestra, the American Diabetes Foundation and the Salvation Army.

“Tony Gorant touched the Summit County community in many ways,” said Clerk of Courts Daniel Horrigan, who presented the award. “He was everyone’s friend; his enthusiasm for our community was contagious, and his work ethic was incredible.”

Also at the event, top county employees received the High Point Award for outstanding work performances. Employees honored were Kevin Bing, of the Department of Environmental Services; John Gaugler, of the Division of Office Services; Ann Shuman, of the Department of Finance and Budget; and Charmaine Thurman, of the Department of Job and Family Services.
