DOWNTOWN AKRON — Hazel Tree Interiors is helping local residents beautify their spaces in an eco-friendly way.

The husband-and-wife team of Jon Haidet and Karen Starr own and operate the business, located at 143 W. Market St. They opened the business two years ago after growing their home-based picture framing and interior design businesses, they said.

Haidet said he has more than 20 years of experience in framing everything from art to three-dimensional keepsakes.

“I like a challenge,” he said.

In addition to homeowners, he works with corporate clients and makes the process simple by offering free delivery and pickup. He’ll also bring samples and materials to the workplace so corporate clients don’t have to leave their offices.

Haidet also noted that Hazel Tree offers an art service where clients can select a print and have it sized to fit their space. The giclee prints are printed using a blend of inks, which makes any size a high-quality print, he added.

Starr said she calls herself an interior redesigner. She likes helping clients repurpose the objects they already own.

“I work with each homeowner or business owner and look at pieces they already have around them and maximize that first,” she said. “Then we get good flow and function with those pieces, and then when we fill in the blanks, we try to emphasize environmentally sound materials.”

She added she also does hourly consultations to help clients with tasks such as finding the right colors for a room or home.

Starr enjoys working with older homes and feels she’s found a good niche in the West Akron area.

“I’m in love with the architecture and history of our region,” she said.

Since opening the store, the couple has been able to provide a retail location for locally made décor items ranging from lamps to furniture.

“If we love it and it’s locally made, which to us is about an hour, that’s really what we have,” Starr said.

Hazel Tree Interiors is open Tuesdays through Fridays from 11 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturdays and at other times by appointment. For more information, call 330-761-3100 or go to www.hazeltreeinteriors.com.
