FAIRLAWN — Scott’s Custom Jewelers makes it easy — and fun — to be your own jewelry designer.

The business, owned by Scott and Beth Cevasco, is about to mark 12 years in business, the last seven in Fairlawn. Last year, the store moved a block from its former location to 55 Ghent Road so it has more room for its manufacturing area, Beth Cevasco said.

Beth Cevasco said when the business relocated to Fairlawn from Downtown Akron, she and her husband also re-evaluated their merchandise.

“The quality of the merchandise we were able to buy was subpar,” she said. “A lot is made overseas and it’s not of good quality. We were constantly repairing.”

The couple made the decision to go into custom jewelry design, and they invested in software and hardware to use a computer aided design (CAD) technique.

Customers are encouraged to make an appointment to meet with a designer, who can look over the contents of a jewelry box and advise on what type of jewelry a customer already has and how the pieces can be updated or modified.

Using the CAD system, the designer can show what a custom made piece can look like.

“We can show three-dimensional pictures and different angles,” Beth Cevasco said. “It’s very nice because before you’ve even started you can see the detail and decide if you like it or not. We can make molds, too, so you can see what it looks like, so there’s no surprises except for the sparkle.”

Beth Cevasco said the business can design and create rings, necklaces and other jewelry pieces. One of its most popular services is updating wedding rings.

“Styles change. You’re not wearing the same clothes you did then,” Beth Cevasco said. “A lot are because people’s children are getting married and they say they’d like to bump this up a little bit or maybe they’ve inherited some family jewelry.”

The business also can design and create new wedding sets for engaged couples and use family stones and gold from old jewelry, which also saves on the cost, Beth Cevasco said.

Because they are done on-site, most designs can be ready within a week or two, she added.

The business also repairs jewelry and can provide insurance appraisals, she said.
