Ninniís Bakery offering authentic Italian flavors

NORTH AKRON — Ninni’s Bakery has been serving area customers for more than 85 years.

According to Anthony Ninni, his great-grandfather Antonio Ninni brought recipes for genuine Italian delicacies to New York, and then his grandfather, Vito Antonio Ninni, brought them to Akron during World War II. The family built a new, modern bakery at 1155 E. Tallmadge Ave. in December 1997, where Anthony Ninni and his son Aric Ninni, who is the fifth generation in the family business, continue to serve customers a variety of Italian favorites.

“We use the recipes handed down through five generations to create our products,” said Anthony Ninni. “And our products use the finest ingredients for authentic old world flavor and flair.”

Ninni said the bakery’s specialties include the Italian torte cake, cookies, pastries and breads.

The bakery’s website describes the Italian torte cake as three layers of rum-flavored sponge cake filled with one layer of vanilla custard and one with chocolate custard. The cake is topped with fresh whipped cream and decorated with fresh whipped cream roses.

Ninni’s can also design unique wedding cakes for each customer by appointment, according to company officials. The cakes are decorated with whipped cream and accented with whipped cream roses or fresh flowers, and come in a variety of flavors and fillings.

Other special occasion cakes can also be created for different kinds of celebrations, such as birthdays and anniversaries, according to Ninni. He also said the bakery soon will begin offering American chocolate or yellow cakes of various sizes and with different fillings, topped with sweetened whipped cream as opposed to butter cream.

Other favorites at the bakery include almond cookies, which Ninni said are made using only egg whites, Torrone nougat candy and pastries such as cannoli, tiramisú, cream puffs and fruit tarts, all of which are homemade. Trays of a variety of miniature pastries or cookies can be ordered.

“Our elegant and sophisticated cookie trays or a tray of pastries make a great gift,” said Ninni.

Ninni’s Bakery also has freshly baked breads and rolls. The bread products include Italian, Sicilian and Tuscan breads, as well as pizza bread, pepperoni bread and focaccia.

Traditional Easter items, including Easter bread filled with raisins and egg-shaped cupcakes in various colors, are now available. Customers can also visit the bakery for a coffee and a pastry.

The bakery is open Tuesdays through Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and is closed Sundays and Mondays.
