NORTH AKRON — In December, after 58 years at a Downtown Akron location, United Vacuum Cleaner Store of Akron Inc., also known as Good Housekeeper Appliances, moved to its new location at 1604 Home Ave. to make room for Akron Children’s Hospital’s expansion.

“The move offered us an opportunity to create a bigger showroom and more convenient parking for our customers, and it’s only a few extra miles,” said Anthony Bologna, company owner and president. “And we are on a two-way street now and in a plaza with other stores.”

Bologna said he took over the business created by his uncle and his uncle’s wife, Vince and Gladys Bologna, in 1987. He credits the company’s longevity to the trust it has developed with customers.

“We believe if you treat a customer right, they will be loyal and refer others to us for their vacuum needs,” said Bologna.

United Vacuum sells and services vacuum cleaners, rug and hard floor shampooers and steamers, as well as American Home sewing machines and Amish heat surge fireplaces.

Bologna said the new store carries major vacuum brands such as Eureka, Hoover, Dirt Devil, Royal, Fuller Brush, Cirrus and Koblenz, as well as a commercial line of cleaners.

The shop’s most popular brand is the Fuller Brush line, which Bologna said is the only one that has a metal handle, brush roller and a bottom plate. It is rated for commercial use, weighs 13 pounds and is the only vacuum that works on frieze carpets, said Bologna.

“This is a durable machine and medium priced, so it’s affordable for everyone,” said Bologna. “It has a unique three-year warranty for all parts, lifetime free labor and lifetime belts (two belts free per year for residential use.) This means a customer will never buy a belt or pay for labor for the life of the machine.”

United Vacuum also services any brand and age of vacuum and sewing machines and has one of the largest inventories of new and used parts and accessories, according to Bologna.

“Our service is the lifeblood of the company. If someone needs something fixed, we can do it,” he said. “We offer free estimates and can advise a customer on whether the item is worth repairing.”

The store is open Mondays through Fridays from 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. and Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.
