GREATER AKRON — Pet owners wanting to give their dogs a walk during the day or needing someone to care for a pet while away can get help from SouthPaw Pet Sitting.

The eight-year-old business is owned by Jackie Pekar. She said she is a certified veterinary assistant and pet technician, which covers first aid for pets, and can help care for dogs, cats, birds and fish. The business has been a member of Pet Sitters International since 2005 and the Greater Akron Pet Pros since 2007, according to Pekar.

Pekar and two employees offer their services from 6:30 a.m. to 11 p.m. daily. Her services, available to customers in West Akron, parts of Downtown Akron, the Merriman Valley and Fairlawn, include daily walks for pets whose owners work long hours and for those who are out of town. She also will feed and give water to pets, do litter box maintenance and offer some animal companionship.

Pekar added she is considering adding a one-hour-long group dog walk in one of the parks in Metro Parks, Serving Serving Summit County.

“What is more fun than a car ride and going to the park?” she said. “This is great for people with active dogs.”

Pekar said pet sitting services are a great alternative to boarding an animal.

“Our customers see the value in keeping pets at home but getting them out when they need it,” she said. “People like coming home and having their pet there to greet them, and it gives them peace of mind after a long day to know someone is caring for their pet.”

Pekar said she also offers customized pet care for those with special needs and will meet with clients in their own home to create such a plan.

Pekar said she attends pet sitting conferences and seminars on nutrition, pet behavior, vaccinations, general pet care and enrichment, and can offer customers help with a variety of issues and redirect them to valuable resources.

“I like to stay on the cutting edge to help my clients’ pets,” she said. “I can notice odd lumps on pets, help with behavior issues and offer guidance on what to feed a pet.”

Pekar said she also offers housesitting while looking after pets, such as bringing in mail, watering plants and rotating lights to give a home the “lived-in look.”

“We are reliable and trustworthy, and we really care about animals,” said Pekar.
