AAF-Akron announces winners of 2014 ADDY® Awards
DOWNTOWN AKRON — The Akron Chapter of the American Advertising Federation (AAF-Akron) hosted its annual American Advertising Awards (also known as ADDY® Awards) ceremony Feb. 21 at the Akron Civic Theatre.
With nearly 300 professionals and students from the Greater Akron advertising community in attendance, 50 professional awards and 10 student awards were given for work completed in the 2013 calendar year.
Three judges from outside the area scored and judged each of the 215 entries. Based on the judging results, the top percentage of work earns Gold ADDYs and the next tier earns Silver ADDYs. There also are five more awards given — Judges Choice (one from each judge) and Best of Show and Student Best of Show (chosen by all three judges as the best entry of the year).
Best of Show was awarded to Geometry Global for the Nokia Comic Con campaign, which also won a Gold ADDY Award. Student Best of Show and a Gold ADDY were earned by Kevin Stuhldreher and Katie Soinski from The University of Akron for their Myers Interactive Installation.
Judges Choice Awards were given to: 427 Design for its 427 Design Open House VII campaign; Kron Corp. for the Costley Ct. (funk band) poster; and TRIAD/Next Level for the Smithers-Oasis Product Guide.
The big winners of the night were 427 Design with eight awards, TRIAD/Next Level with five awards and Kleidon & Associates, WhiteSpace Creative and Kent State University, each with four awards. Many other local agencies, studios and corporations also took home a variety of Gold and Silver awards.
AAF-Akron awarded its 2014 Silver Medal Award, the highest level of recognition given by the Akron chapter and akin to a lifetime achievement award, according chapter officials, to Jack DeLeo, recently retired president and CEO of Hitchcock Fleming & Associates Inc.
The event featured food from 14 local restaurants and caterers, as well as a “Great Gatsby” theme, which drew period-specific costumes and attire from many attendees.

House of Hunan Fairlawn renovating; kitchen open for pick-up, delivery orders
FAIRLAWN — House of Hunan at Fairlawn Town Centre will be open for pick-up and delivery while the dining room will be closed for six to eight weeks for remodeling.
The grand re-opening is slated for April.
Customers who pick up a menu at the Fairlawn restaurant will receive a 20 percent discount at the Medina and Downtown House of Hunan locations.
All pick-up and delivery orders at the Fairlawn location will receive double points on their rewards cards.

Todaro’s introduces new Event Space
MERRIMAN VALLEY — Todaro’s Party Center officials have announced that the ballroom at the center has been transformed into a fresh backdrop for modern weddings, business events and other celebrations.
The Event Space, Todaro’s new brand and signature, is the culmination of years in the catering and event planning business, according to center officials, who added Corporate CEO and company President Frank Todaro is focused on bridging the gap between traditional values and the modern perspective.
Selections of wedding packages are available, or the team will customize one. Contemporary rooms are available to host from 50 to 800 guests. According to center officials, Todaro’s staff consistently creates fresh and vibrant settings for every style and type of reception, and chefs offer traditional and modern flair.
Todaro learned the business from his father, Mel, according to center officials. Mel and his wife, Mary, started the business more than 50 years ago catering affairs in church basements.
“I believe in getting back to basics and delivering a product and service which my family can be proud to stand behind,” Todaro said in a press release. “When dignitaries visit this area, our ideal venue has been chosen to serve Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, CIA Director Leon Paneta and [Ohio] Gov. Ted Strickland, just to name a few. We command trust and provide ongoing performance.”
