COPLEY — Custom Tree and Lawn is a professional tree and lawn care business serving a six-county area that includes Summit, Medina and Stark counties.

The five-year-old business is owned by Rick Sandmann, who said he had 30 years of experience working in the field before starting his own business.

Sandmann said his staff helps customers care for their trees and shrubs by identifying the variety and evaluating their health to determine how to best care for them, whether they can be saved or whether they should be removed.

The business offers tree pruning, removes both large and small trees and offers stump grinding. Sandmann said his staff is experienced in the use of the types of cranes needed to take down very large trees.

“We are currently dealing with an infestation of emerald ash borer in the area, and we are removing these diseased and dead trees,” said Sandman. “We also sometimes take out large, old trees so that customers can replace them with younger, healthy ones.”

Sandmann said they can leave the cut trees for customers to burn or they can haul it away.

Custom Tree also offers ornamental tree and shrub pruning and can fertilize and spray where needed to care for them.

Sandmann said after this hard winter, he is seeing a lot of “winter burn” on ornamental plants such as rhododendrons. He added that these plants sometimes require more fertilization to recover from that kind of damage.

Custom Tree recently expanded to add a lawn care program, according to Sandmann. The program includes five annual lawn applications and grub control. Chemical weed sprays and granular fertilizers are applied in early spring to prevent crabgrass, late spring to catch weeds, mid-summer and fall for feeding and weeding, and a fifth application to put the lawn to sleep for winter. The grub control also is applied in the spring.

Sandmann explained the grub control application is applied to keep insects that eat the roots of grass away.

“Grubs gravitate to healthy lawns, and to keep the grass looking its best, you have to put down a regular grub control,” said Sandmann.

He said the business also offers customized lawn programs to fit customers’ needs.

Custom Tree and Lawn Care offers free evaluations on lawns, trees and shrubs, as well as cost estimates to address problems. Free estimates are offered through an online form at customtreeinc.com or by calling 330-603-9315.
