COVENTRY — Looking to part ways with some of your old gold jewelry? Akron Coin & Jewelry Inc. provides its customers with the best price on gold, according to Chuck Kepnes, the family-owned business’ vice president.

“We buy so much [gold] that we can pay more for it than someone else,” Kepnes said. “We see it every single day.”

He added it’s not unusual for Akron Coin & Jewelry to pay someone $300 for gold that another business offered the customer $120.

The company has been at its 3235 Manchester Road, Suite 12, location for 18 years, Kepnes said, which is a sign of Akron Coin & Jewelry’s stability.

“Some of these places that are out there buying gold are just fly-by-night operations,” Kepnes said. “We hold a license from the state of Ohio, a precious metals dealers license. If they don’t have that, they are not legally able to buy.”

Kepnes said even those dealers with a license may not be the company with which you want to do business.

“There’s a lot of businesses buying gold, but you’ve got to shop around,” Kepnes said. “We’ll quote prices over the phone, whereas other places will not.”

He added that gold is trading from anywhere between $1,000 and $1,200 an ounce today.

“It’s just worth so much right now because of the market in general with inflation pressures,” he said. “It’s something you can always fall back on.”

Kepnes said he advises customers who wish to sell their gold to shop around and compare.

“You’ll get a feeling when you go into the business if you want to sell it or not,” he said. “If you don’t feel comfortable, don’t sell it there.”

In addition to gold, Kepnes said Akron Coin & Jewelry also purchases wheat pennies, silver quarters, silver dollars and silver certificates. He said he encourages customers who aren’t sure if what they have is valuable to stop in and get a quote.

The company also offers jewelry repair, Kepnes said. Services offered include ring sizing, soldering of chains and replacement of diamonds in rings.

The business also sells new and pre-owned jewelry at reasonable prices, Kepnes said.

Akron Coin & Jewelry is open Mondays from noon to 5:45 p.m., Tuesdays through Thursdays from 10 a.m. to 5:45 p.m., Fridays from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., and Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.
