LAKEMORE — A Martin Luther King Jr. Day celebration at the Akron General Edwin Shaw Rehab facility Jan. 21 included a keynote address by the Rev. Ronald Fowler, Ph.D., senior pastor of Arlington Church of God in South Akron, pictured at right.

The theme for the event, “A Constant Heart in a Changing World,” was the second event of its kind at the facility honoring the legacy of King. The event also included an art contest for Springfield High School students.

“The students’ volunteer work at the facility and their artwork reflect one facet of the message presented by Martin Luther King,” said Mary Beth Berda, organizer of the event.

The Springfield High School Choir also performed at the celebration.

Berda said Springfield art teacher Nancy Michel spent time teaching students about King. Students responded by creating artwork to illustrate his life and accomplishments and how his message spoke to their heart.

Contest winners, shown at left, from left, include volunteer Alexis Squire, third place; Julie Williams, second; and John Reynolds, who won first place for the second year in a row. They are shown standing with Susan Gregg, vice president of operations at Edwin Shaw. The students received gift certificates for art supplies from Cook’s Art Supply and Framing.

The first through third contest winners’ artwork is shown below, from left.
