Candidates file for president, Congress
SUMMIT/MEDINA COUNTIES — The filing deadline for candidates for U.S. president and Congress was Dec. 30 for the March 6 Primary Election.
Due to congressional redistricting, which was required after the last Census and will go into effect Jan. 1, 2013, Ohio will lose two congressional seats, dropping from 18 to 16, according to Ohio Secretary of State Jon Husted’s Office.

In the newly created District 13, Democrat U.S. Rep. Tim Ryan, whose District 17 will be consolidated into District 13 due to redistricting, will face Republican Marisha Agana. Since each candidate is unopposed in the primary, the winner of the seat will be decided in the Nov. 6 General Election.
In District 14, incumbent Republican Steven LaTourette will face challengers Democrat Dale Blanchard, Green Party candidate Elaine Mastromatteo and Libertarian David Macko. Since each candidate is unopposed in the primary, the winner of the seat will be decided in November.
In District 16, which will include parts of the former District 13, incumbent Republican Jim Renacci will face challengers Democrat U.S. Rep. Betty Sutton, whose District 13 will be consolidated into District 16 because of the redistricting, and Libertarian Jeffrey Blevins. The winner will be decided in November.
Husted’s Office also announced nine candidates filed for president for Ohio’s Primary Election. The Republicans include: Michele Bachmann, Newt Gingrich, Jon Huntsman, Ron Paul, Rick Perry, Mitt Romney and Rick Santorum. The Democrats include incumbent President Barack Obama and Randall Terry.
According to Husted’s Office, county boards of elections had until Jan. 4 to determine the validity and sufficiency of partisan candidates’ petitions.
The deadline for write-in candidates was Dec. 27.
Republican Nancy DeLambo filed for the Summit County Council District 2 seat. She had previously filed as a Republican for the seat, but due to problems with her petitions, she withdrew them before they were certified, according to the Summit County Board of Elections. She will face Democratic incumbent John Schmidt.
