COPLEY — A group of lady beetles, perhaps thinking it may be springtime due to recent mild temperatures, ventured out of a log in which they were overwintering.

According to The Ohio State University Extension Service, a group of a few up to several hundred lady beetles will overwinter together starting in the fall. Overwintering sites may include the base of a tree, along a fence, in a log or under a fallen tree or a rock.

Sometimes beetles also will congregate in and around homes, becoming a nuisance. Extension officials suggest residents caulk and seal spaces and gaps to prevent lady beetles from coming inside and to remove any lady beetles found indoors. Since lady beetles are considered a beneficial insect, however, insecticide treatment is not suggested.
