SUMMIT COUNTY — The National Park Service (NPS) and Metro Parks, Serving Summit County are in the process of conducting prescribed burns on parklands in the area.

In the prairie meadow at the F. A. Seiberling Nature Realm on Smith Road in West Akron, park officials conducted a controlled burn March 27. About 2 acres were burned in the process.

“Fire is a tool we’ve started using in recent years to control shrubby growth and encourage grasses and native wildflowers,” park district spokesman Nate Eppink said.

Last week, Metro Parks conducted a controlled burn at Springfield Bog Metro Park, and plans call for burning to take place at Silver Creek Metro Park in Norton later this season.

In the Cuyahoga Valley National Park, NPS officials said prescribed burning would take place sometime between March 26 and April 30 in Boston Township. The exact location is off of Boston Mills Road just south of Interstate 80, NPS officials announced. Up to 10 acres of land will be burned in order to maintain native plant species and prevent the spread of woody brush, NPS officials said.

Weather conditions must be right to conduct the burning, NPS officials said. Before burning, a designated set of conditions must exist including ideal air temperature, wind speed and direction and relative humidity. Weather conditions will be monitored throughout the duration of the burn to ensure the fire is completed safely, according to NPS officials.
