DOWNTOWN AKRON —Akron Mayor Don Plusquellic and other city officials honored the city’s top youth volunteers April 24, Global Youth Service Day, at the Akron-Summit County Main Library.

Global Youth Service Day, the largest service event in the world, mobilizes youth to identify and address the needs of their communities through service-learning and community service, according to city officials.

The Akron youths took part in a reception, followed by a program that evening. The teens are among those in the United States who collectively have contributed more than 2 billion hours of service to communities, Akron officials said.

Students who were honored are:

• Ty’Easha Johnson, Volunteer of the Year in the 12- and 13-year-olds category, for 20 hours spent providing students at Perkins Middle School with music lessons;

• Caroline Christoff, Outstanding Volunteer in the 12- and 13-year-olds category, for her volunteering 50 hours a month at One of a Kind Pet Rescue;

• Daisya Marie Hadden, Volunteer of the Year in the 14- and 15-year-olds category, for her 128 hours of volunteer service at Arlington Church of God;

• Andrew Feist, Outstanding Volunteer (tie) in the 14- and 15-year-olds category, for donating 488 hours of IT and technical expertise at PAWSibilities, Humane Society of Greater Akron;

• Amelia Newberry, Outstanding Volunteer (tie) in the 14- and 15-year-olds category, for 140 hours volunteering with Friends of the Stow-Monroe Falls Public Library;

• Karris Barclay, Volunteer of the Year in the 16 years and older category, for spending 111 hours on giving a gift to mothers and families leaving Harvest Home through Girl Scouts of North East Ohio, Troop No. 90358; and

• Andrew Appleby, Outstanding Volunteer in the 16 and older category, for 170 hours of volunteer work at Patterson Park Community Center.

Akron officials said nominating agencies of winners would receive a cash donation in the name of the winning volunteer. Akron and sponsor U.S. Bank presented $200 donations in the name of each first place Volunteer of the Year and a contribution of $150 in the name of each second place Outstanding Volunteer.
