Richfield Village Council agreed May 15 to support a look at a new community recreation center.

Councilman Andrew Ellis said the village’s support of the group interested in a Revere Local Schools District area recreation center “doesn’t commit the village to spending a penny.”

In other action, Council accepted the bids of DunRite Construction for the painting of Fellowship Hall ($13,110) and Old Town Hall ($18,002).

Council also accepted the bid of Cavanaugh Building Corp. for improvements on the Pedigo Carter Property Trail at a cost of $209,535.

In other news:

• Mayor Bobbie Beshara reported the village has changed its Internet provider to Time Warner Business Class, increasing from 6 to 10 megabytes of bandwidth.

She said communications supervisor Tim Baker has been working on upgrading the village’s technical standards.

“This will save us money in the future,” she said. “Sometimes, we would try to send files by email, but they would be too large to go through.”

The mayor also portrayed a victim’s mother in the recent mock prom accident at Revere High School, which is staged every two years to illustrate the dangers of drinking and driving. Beshara also reported she has received résumés for the fire chief position, as current Fire Chief Joseph Stopak is nearing retirement.

Beshara also said the village will have four summer workers between the ages of 16 and 24 to help with summer camp, wash windows and work with the Service Department from June 11 to Aug. 31. The village will pay them $7.70 per hour and then get that money reimbursed by the county.

• Police Chief Keith Morgan thanked Council for approving the hiring of full-time officer John Petrovich and part-time officers Rob Young, Steve Robinson and Dave Polak.

He also said 200 students graduated one day earlier from the D.A.R.E. (Drug Abuse Resistance Education) program.

• Lt. Bob Jones said the Richfield Fire Department participated in Vehicle Day at Hillcrest Elementary School, as the students got to see vehicles from the fire and police departments, post office, dog catcher and others.

• Service Director Melanie Baker said Perrin Asphalt will be working on the portion of Brecksville Road north of Interstate 271.

• Recreation Director Ruth Jocek said the fourth annual Farmers’ Market will take place each Wednesday starting June 6, and that seven weeks of summer day camp will begin June 11.

• Planning and Zoning Director Brian Frantz said the Planning and Zoning Commission (PZC) is continuing to work toward the adoption of the Akron Metropolitan Area Transportation Study Connecting Communities plan for the Wheatley Road corridor.

Frantz said he and planner Ken Crandall will make recommendations to the PZC for the village’s master plan.

• Council Vice President Richard Hudak reported the Buildings and Grounds Committee met one night earlier at the 27-acre village-owned property at 3921 Brecksville Road, which is a storage site for the Service Department.

“We need to take a serious look at the needs of the Service Department,” Hudak said. “That site is not adequate.”

The next Building and Grounds Committee meeting is scheduled for July 16 at 6:30 p.m. at the Town Hall.

• Council President Mike Wheeler announced Council will conduct a work session June 11 at 6:30 p.m. to discuss funding for the Briarwood sewer construction project.

The next Richfield Village Council meeting is scheduled for June 5 at 8 p.m. at the Town Hall, 4410 W. Streetsboro Road.
