MERRIMAN VALLEY — Great blue heron enthusiasts enjoyed the chance to see the latest additions to the local bird community at a Metro Parks, Serving Summit County event June 2-3. To celebrate the delivery of baby great blue herons, visitors were welcome to take a peek at the birds from a viewing area at the Bath Road Heronry near the Towpath Trail.

Spectators like Jennifer Csiszar, of North Royalton, who is shown at right bottom with Metro Parks volunteer Dave Reinhart, of Stow, had the chance to see views like the one shown at right top, in which baby blue herons are being fed.

An adult heron is pictured at left bottom as it flies off in search of the next meal for the young.

Shown at left top is Metro Parks naturalist Mike Greene as he views the scene with binoculars.

Metro Parks officials said herons lay up to six eggs that require incubation for 25 to 30 days, and after the babies hatch, they remain in the nest for up to eight weeks before they fly for the first time.
