Renters looking to dwell in the growing community of Cuyahoga Falls soon will have more options.

During a brief regular meeting June 11, City Council introduced an ordinance to approve the final plat application for the second and last phase of the Manchester Falls Subdivision, located in Ward 1.

The Planning Commission unanimously approved the final plat for the residential development June 5, according to city officials.

The 18-acre subdivision is being constructed by Pride One Construction, of Medina, on Howe Avenue, east of Bailey Road. The first phase of the development contains multi-family housing units, all of which have been rented out, according to information from the Planning Department.

City officials said the second phase would look much like phase one and include green space and a walking trail.

Additionally during the meeting, Council introduced legislation to approve the construction of public improvements along State Road, between Graham Road and Schiller Avenue; Portage Trail, between Norma Street and 25th Street; and on Lillis Drive. The improvements would include the construction of roadways, curbs, sidewalks, sanitary and storm sewers, water mains, traffic control devices, street lighting and landscaping, according to the proposed ordinance.

Council also introduced legislation expressing Council’s support for the Summit County Food Charter (SCFC). The SCFC is a local organization dedicated to improving healthy food access to all county residents, according to the proposed resolution. The SCFC aims to guide individuals and communities to support the local and regional food industry, according to city officials.

In addition June 11, Council approved a preliminary and final plat application for a public utility right-of-way within and adjacent to Hemlock Hills Drive and authorized payment of the moral claim of Lawrence Cook and Kristina Cook, as approved by the Claims Commission.

Council also agreed to file a liquor permit application for Bailey Road Market, 2810 Bailey Road.

An ordinance remains pending concerning a modification in the contract between the city and Portage Crossing LLC to reflect a change in the size and value of Portage Crossing’s project, a proposed retail development at the site of the former State Road Shopping Center.

In other business, Councilwoman Mary Ellen Pyke (R-Ward 2) responded to a written statement made by resident R.G. Fowler. In a letter to the editor he sent to some local newspapers, Fowler expressed displeasure with a lack of Council presence at this year’s Memorial Day parade and service at Oakwood Cemetery.

Pyke said she and Council members Diane Colavecchio (D-Ward 5), Jeff Iula (R-at large) and Carol Klinger (R-at large) were present at the activities. While she understood why Fowler would be upset, she wanted him and the public to know four members of Council were there. Pyke further said, while getting choked up, that she respects each member of Council and his or her commitment to the community they serve.

Council will gather for committee meetings to discuss new legislation June 18 at 6:30 p.m. at the Cuyahoga Falls Natatorium, 2345 Fourth St., and for a regular meeting June 25 at 6:30 p.m., also at the Natatorium.
