DOWNTOWN AKRON — Longtime Summit County Council member Tim Crawford (D-District 7) has been asked to consider filling a vacant position in the Executive’s Office.

The position of deputy director of the Department of Law, Insurance and Risk Management has been vacant since Don Mittiga retired at the end of last year, according to Jason Dodson, chief of staff for County Executive Russ Pry.

Crawford is the former mayor of Norton and was elected to Council in 1993. He’s currently the most senior member of Council. Professionally, he has been an insurance agent for nearly 30 years.

Dodson said Crawford’s background in county and local government and the insurance industry makes him a good fit for the job, which would see him handling day-to-day risk management duties as well as prevailing wage compliance in the county.

During Council’s June 11 Personnel Committee meeting, the committee recommended Council adopt a resolution that would allow Pry to hire a candidate for the position.

Dodson said if Council adopts the resolution during its June 18 meeting, it would be Pry’s intention to offer the job to Crawford.

Councilwoman Gloria Rodgers (R-District 3) asked if the position will be posted, and Dodson said it wouldn’t be because the Executive’s Office believes Crawford would be the best candidate due to his experience. If he does not take the job, then the office would consider posting it.

Crawford was not in attendance during that committee meeting but did attend the evening’s other meetings. At the end of the evening when asked if he would accept the position, he said he would make a decision once Council votes on the legislation next week.

According to the legislation, the deputy director will be paid $34.45 an hour, which is the midpoint for the position.
