County to commemorate War of 1812
SOUTH AKRON — Summit County Executive Russ Pry, Summit County Council and the Summit County Veterans Service Commission (VSC) will gather to commemorate the 200th anniversary of the start of the War of 1812 on June 18.
The event, which is free and open to the public, will be at 11:30 a.m. at the VSC, 1060 E. Waterloo Road in Akron.
Organizers said Sharon Myers, president of the William Wetmore Chapter Daughters of 1812, will present Pry with a 15-star flag being given to the county from the State of Ohio War of 1812 Bicentennial Commission.
Also expected to attend the event are VSC Commissioner Arnon “Sonny” Cool and 1812 re-enactor Ted Dudra.
To honor the “Ring the Bells for 1812” campaign being sponsored by the National Society United States Daughters of 1812, the Summit County Bicentennial Bell will ring at noon that day as the 15-star flag is raised by Dudra.
