The bands will play on at the Copley Circle gazebo this summer.

At the June 6 Copley Township Board of Trustees meeting, trustees approved a request for $9,500 from the Copley Bandstand Committee to assist in paying for six summer concerts.

The summer music lineup includes: The Marlins, June 17; The BelAirs, June 24; The Voices of Ohio, July 1; Freedom Brass Band, July 8; and Barbershop Harmony Spectacular, July 29. The series includes two additional concerts not funded by the township — New Odyssey July 15 and the Stockdale Family Band July 22. All concerts will take place from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Copley Circle gazebo. Visit www.copleybandstand.com for an alternate location for inclement weather.

Township funding for the concerts is derived from cable franchise fees, according to township officials.

Trustees also approved $3,600 for a revised needs assessment for a new police station. The assessment, to be performed by Horne and King Architects of Dublin, will provide three alternatives — a police station with no community room and a full dispatch center, no community room and a small dispatch center and no community room and no dispatch center. The revision is an effort to pare down the cost of a new station. Trustees said space in the Copley Community Center could replace the community room included in the original needs assessment. The community room was designated for training as well as other purposes.

Trustees also want to evaluate inclusion of a dispatch center. Current plans call for the joint dispatch center to move to space in the city of Norton, eliminating the need for a full dispatch center in any new Copley police station. However, trustees said they would like to keep a small dispatch room in the police department in case of a local disaster that would require additional resources.

Also during the meeting, trustees discussed earmarking funds to be used as a dollar-for-dollar match in a county grant program to demolish nuisance abandoned or foreclosed residential structures. Planning Director Matt Springer told trustees he has compiled a list of 70 township properties that met criteria for the program. Money for the program would come from the General Fund, according to the trustees.

In other business, the board:

• approved a collective bargaining agreement with the township’s part-time police officers;

• approved a contract with Time Warner Cable for a metro Ethernet to link Barberton, Norton and Copley for the purposes of a joint dispatch center. Trustees approved $5,351 in hardware costs, of which the township will pay one-third. The township also will share in the $1,050 monthly billing;

• approved a $4,200 change order to Lytle Construction for additional leveling on roads in the Copley Heights allotment before a sealcoat is applied;

• approved a $24,875 purchase order to Perrin Concrete and Asphalt for repair of 29 catch basins in the Wedgewood allotment;

• approved use of the Copley Community Center pavilion for events for the Copley Historical Society and the Copley Active Seniors group;

• approved training for administration, fire and police department personnel;

• noted there were no negative findings in the township financial audit and waived a meeting with the auditors;

• approved selling an obsolete police car to another governmental entity;

• agreed to sell a used copier using an online auction;

• approved a 24-month agreement with FirstEnergy to provide electricity to township buildings; and

• approved payment of $11,520 in maintenance fees for the 800 megahertz radio system to Summit County for the period July through December.

The next trustees’ meeting is set for June 20 at 6 p.m. in the Copley Township offices, 1540 S. Cleveland-Massillon Road.
