Trustees open bids for Stony Hill culvert work
The Granger Township Board of Trustees opened nine bids received to overhaul culvert No. 9 on Stony Hill Road at the June 11 meeting and promptly turned the offers over to the Medina County Engineer’s Office for review.
The Engineer’s Office’s estimate for the cost of the project is $118,750, according to Trustee Richard Pace. The bids received ranged from $96,566 to $125,839, with seven of the nine bids coming in below the estimate.
The project will be funded in part by Issue No. 1 Public Works funds, with the state paying 74 percent and the township responsible for 26 percent of the cost, according to trustees.
Fiscal Officer Barbara Beach said the project will be awarded during a brief special meeting June 18 at 4 p.m.
According to the bid notice, the project will include: removal and partial salvage of the existing 6-by-4-foot stone box culvert, installation of a new 60-inch reinforced concrete culvert including premium bedding and backfill, concrete headwalls, ditch enclosures, catch basins, guardrail, asphalt pavement and general excavation involving ditch realignment and fine grading, and incorporating stipulated traffic control in accordance with the specifications.
The entire project is scheduled to be completed by Sept. 21, according to the Engineer’s Office.
In other business:
• Fire Chief Jim Paulett noted his department responded to 25 EMS and 16 fire calls in May.
• Trustees approved a resolution authorizing the advance of local taxes. Beach noted the action is an annual one, allowing the township to receive the taxes as they are collected.
• Beach stated applications for the Moving Ohio Forward Grant Program, which allocates funds to remove blighted properties in every part of the state, are due by June 30. Pace said this is the first round for grants, and there will be future rounds as long as funding is available.
“It is a good program — it’s an opportunity to demolish a property that serves no purpose and is a safety hazard,” but the upcoming deadline has left little time to act on this round of grant-giving, said Pace.
• Beach also noted the Medina County Health Department will offer free car seat inspections the second Monday of each month from 2 to 6 p.m. at various locations. Appointments are required and can be made by calling 330-662-0467 or 888-723-9688.
• Beach also said the Medina County Treasurer’s Office’s Fix-It Fund program enables Medina County homeowners to repair or remodel their homes at interest rates 3 percent below what a bank would normally offer. For more details, visit www.co.medina.oh.us/treas/fixitfund.htm or call 330-725-9746.
The next regular trustees’ meeting is set for June 25 at 4 p.m. in the Administration Building, 3717 Ridge Road.
