DOWNTOWN AKRON — Akron Police Department (APD) Officer Russell Bassett was recognized as the Optimist Club Officer of the Year at the Optimist International luncheon June 5.

In 1986, the Akron Optimist Club established an award to recognize a police officer for outstanding service to the community and to honor the man for which it was named — Philip Barnes, a former police chief, according to city officials.

“Officer Bassett is very instrumental in the apprehension of wanted fugitives,” said APD Chief Jim Nice. “His supervisors regularly praise him for his diligent work in locating and apprehending wanted fugitives, and he consistently goes above and beyond the call of duty on a daily basis.”

According to city officials, Bassett joined the APD in December 1994. He currently is assigned to the day shift patrol division. He has volunteered for temporary assignment in the Juvenile, Auto Theft and Missing Persons units and worked with the U.S. Marshals Office — Northern Ohio Violent Fugitive Task Force. He also was assigned to the Operation Spring Cleaning initiative in 2009.

Bassett is a graduate of Kenmore High School and earned a bachelor’s degree in political science, as well as an associate’s degree in criminal justice and a minor in sociology, according to city officials.
