Coventry trustees placing fire/EMS levy renewal on ballot
COVENTRY — The Coventry Board of Trustees took the first step necessary to seek the renewal of a current fire/emergency medical services (EMS) levy.
During a special meeting June 12, the board approved a request to have Summit County Fiscal Officer Kristen Scalise calculate and certify the amount for a 2.25-mill, fire/EMS levy renewal for placement on the Nov. 6 General Election Ballot.
Coventry Fiscal Officer Joni Murgatroyd said the board will vote on a resolution in July to place the issue on the ballot officially.
“It is a five-year levy,” Murgatroyd said. “If approved by our residents, it will be effective tax year 2012, with the first collection 2013. This is our second primary fire/EMS levy and very critical to the support of our fire/EMS daily operations.”
She said the fire/EMS levy that voters would be asked to renew currently provides the township with $512,807 annually. The last collection year for the levy is this year, she said.
“There will be no new taxes collected with this levy since it is a renewal,” Murgatroyd said.
The board also approved the lease purchase of a new Pierce Custom Saber 2,500 Gallon Tender for up to $453,977 from Pierce Manufacturing Inc. and Finley Fire Equipment from the Cooperative Purchasing Program through the Ohio Department of Administrative Services. After a township down payment of about $86,000 is made, the remaining balance will be paid in increments through a three-year lease program with FirstMerit Equipment Finance Inc., according to information provided by township officials.
The board additionally approved paying up to $1,500 in postage for Republic Services to mail information concerning the new trash aggregation program to township residents.
During the special meeting, the board also agreed to request a hearing concerning a new D5 liquor license application for Harban LLC, doing business as Banquet Room, on the second floor of 562 Portage Lakes Drive.
The trustees met last night, June 14, for a regular meeting. Details of that meeting will be in next week’s issue.
The next regular Coventry trustees’ meeting is set for July 12 at 7:30 p.m. at the Town Hall, 68 Portage Lakes Drive.
