Akron is continuing to work on infrastructure improvements, thanks to Akron City Council’s approval of a number of projects at the June 18 meeting.

One project includes compliance with a component of the Americans With Disabilities Act to help those who use a wheelchair and others with disabilities to more easily traverse city streets, according to city officials.

The work involves continuing to create curb ramps on streets in the city. The program is an annual measure.

City of Akron Engineer Jim Hewitt said the city is about 30 percent done on plans to make such curb cuts.

Council also approved payment to H.M. Miller Construction for emergency repairs done to an existing 12-inch water main near the Interstate 77 and Cleveland-Massillon Road overpass on the border of Copley Township and the city of Fairlawn.

According to city officials, that erosion had washed out and exposed the water main, and the repairs have already been done to protect the water from freezing and undermining the overpass.

The next Akron City Council meeting is scheduled for June 25 at 7 p.m. in Council Chambers, located on the third floor of the Akron Municipal Building, 166 S. High St. Committee meetings will begin at 2 p.m., also in Council Chambers.
