Sharon trustees prohibit truck traffic on Boneta Road
While the city of Medina moves forward with rehabilitating a runway at Medina Municipal Airport, the Sharon Township Board of Trustees hopes trucks traveling to the worksite will not use township roads to get there, said Trustee Ray Lurtz at the board’s June 12 meeting.
The suggested route for trucks is to get to the site by entering from state Route 18, on which the airport is located, said Service Director Bob Turek.
The airport is located in Sharon, but trustees do not feel the township should be responsible for road damage incurred from heavy truck travel on Boneta Road, said Lurtz.
To that end, trustees voted unanimously to place signs in four locations along Boneta Road, including at state Route 162, Ridgewood Road, state Route 18 and just south of the airport gate, prohibiting truck traffic.
In other business, Lurtz said bids for improvements to culvert No. 3 on Koontz Road will be accepted at the Fire Station until June 26 at 5:30 p.m. and opened at the trustees’ meeting later that evening.
According to the bid notice, the project is to involve removal and partial salvage of the existing 4-by-4-foot concrete box culvert and installation of a new 54-inch reinforced concrete culvert.
The Medina County Engineer’s estimate for the project is $137,313, and the expected completion date is by Oct. 26.
Medina County Civil Engineer Dan Becker said at a previous trustees’ meeting the culvert, which was built in the 1930s and is located about halfway down Koontz Road, is starting to fail. The project was approved to be funded by Issue No. 1 funds, he added, which means the state will fund 75 percent of the cost of the project, leaving the township responsible for the remaining amount.
Also at the meeting:
• Fire Chief Rob Haas said advanced extrication training for members of the Sharon Fire Department was scheduled for the weekend of June 15.
• Rob Haas also said he has a meeting planned with the new fire chiefs in Granger and Hinckley townships later his month to discuss ways the departments can collaborate better.
• Trustee Kimberly Bolas Miller noted the schedule for the summer concert series being held in the gazebo on Sharon Circle. All performances will be Thursdays beginning at 7 p.m., and attendees are welcome to bring a blanket or folding chair. In the event of rain, performances will be held in the Town Hall. The schedule is as follows:
√ June 28, The Steelheaders, with refreshments provided by Granger Boy Scout Troop No. 511;
√ July 12, Jim Gill, with refreshments provided by the Sharon Women’s Club;
√ July 26, Blue Streak, with refreshments to be announced; and
√ Aug. 9, Coyote Junction, with refreshments provided by Sharon United Methodist Church.
• Zoning Inspector Neil Jones reported the township is experiencing somewhat of a “housing boom,” with four more single-family residential home permits issued since the last trustees’ meeting. That makes 17 new home permits issued already this year, compared to 12 issued all of last year, said Jones.
• Trustees said they would allow St. Paul’s Lutheran Church to hold a celebration service at Sharon Circle Sept. 9, including the use of chairs and a sound system owned by the township.
• Fiscal Officer Anita Haas said repairs to a nicked gas line in the cemetery caused by a township employee using a backhoe, expected to cost $1,503, will be covered by insurance with no deductible.
• Anita Haas also said the Medina County Health Department will offer free car seat inspections the second Monday of each month from 2 to 6 p.m. at various locations. Appointments are required and can be made by calling 330-662-0467 or 888-723-9688.
• Trustees approved, after some discussion with developer Mark Michaels, extending the deadline to Sept. 1 for him to finish topcoat paving in the Sharon Falls subdivision. The board had previously granted Michaels with multiple extensions and were considering going after his bond to have the road surfacing completed, they said.
• Bolas Miller said trustees will meet with their risk management consulting company prior to their next regular meeting, to discuss recommendations regarding liability issues.
“They made five recommendations, which is fairly common for us,” she said.
• Bolas Miller also said FirstMerit Bank in Sharon Center, slated to close this summer, would like to donate its furniture to nonprofit organizations in the township. She said interested parties should contact her. The phone number to the township’s offices is 330-239-4406.
• Trustee Brian Guccion asked the trustees to go into executive session regarding confidential personnel matters.
“I got a disturbing call this week that our confidentiality in our Zoning Office has been compromised,” he said.
Trustees returned to the public meeting after half an hour, deciding that effective immediately, the doors to the Zoning Office will remain locked during business hours, requiring visitors to knock on the window for service. Guccion also added an apology to those affected.
Trustees next will meet June 26 at 7 p.m. in the Administration Building on Sharon Circle.
