FAIRLAWN — The first of two holiday celebrations in Fairlawn took place July 1 as residents gathered for the city’s annual fireworks display. While a storm passed through the area earlier that evening, it didn’t keep the show from going on at Bicentennial Park.

Fairlawn residents Dr. Cassandra Hirsh and her husband, Brian Harrell, who are shown at right top with their 7-year-old daughter, Emma Harrell, were among those who came out to hear music from the Brass Band of the Western Reserve.

Holden Simon, of Akron, entertained the crowd around her before the fireworks with her lighted hula hoop, as shown at right bottom.

The fireworks began at 10 p.m. and lit up the skies in the area for about 20 minutes, as shown at left.

Fairlawn’s celebration was set to continue July 4 with its annual Fourth of July Parade on West Market Street. Both events were made possible through the Fairlawn Community Foundation.
