Corbin Foundation awards grants, gifts to area organizations
GREATER AKRON — At its May 14 Board of Trustees meeting, The Mary S. and David C. Corbin Foundation awarded $381,500 in grants and gifts to charities and charitable activities, mostly in the Akron and Summit County areas. In addition to the awards approved, the foundation continues paying down its $150,000 commitment to Summa Akron City and St. Thomas Hospitals Foundation for a new Confocal Laser Scanning Microscope and its $100,000 commitment to the Boy Scouts of America — Great Trail Council for its new Camp Manatoc Fitness and Aquatic Center.
The newly awarded recipients included:
• Akron Community Service Center and Urban League, $5,000 for its Summer Enrichment Day Camp;
• Akron General Development Foundation — Edwin Shaw Rehabilitation Institute, $10,000 for a bariatric lift system;
• Akron Marathon Corp., $5,000 for an intern and $5,000 for its 10th anniversary event enhancements;
• Akron Woman’s City Club — Coach House Theatre, $10,000 for its Opening Night for Tomorrow Capital Campaign;
• Akron Zoological Park, $25,000 for interactive education elements of Grizzly Ridge;
• All Star Training Club, $5,000 for Summer Academic/Sports Camp scholarships;
• Battered Women’s Shelter, $15,000 for its crisis intervention program;
• Big Brothers/Sisters of Summit and Medina Counties, $5,000 for its Big/Little Community Match program;
• Blick Clinic for Developmental Disabilities Inc., $8,000 for a roof over its wheelchair ramp and picnic area;
• Boys and Girls Clubs of the Western Reserve, $10,000 for its Arlington Club’s general overhead;
• Choices, A Community Social Center Inc., $3,000 for a network/software upgrade;
• Cleveland Modern Dance Association (dba DANCECleveland), $5,000 for Summit County outreach;
• Cow Creek Presbyterian Church, $3,000 for a 2012 contribution;
• Conservancy for Cuyahoga Valley National Park, $10,000 for its Peninsula retail/visitor project;
• Cuyahoga Valley Preservation and Scenic Railway, $10,000 for its 2012 budget;
• Downtown Akron Partnership, $6,000 for its Downtown Akron Beautification program;
• Freedom House for Women Inc., $10,000 for its Adult Support Services program;
• The Friends of Children’s Hospital Harness Race Rally, $2,000 for a contribution;
• Friends of Historic Glendale Cemetery, $5,000 for the fencing piece of its Grounds Improvement project;
• Girl Scouts of North East Ohio, $6,500 for its Positive Futures program;
• Hattie Larlham Community Living, $5,000 for display case replacement and purchase of a griddle;
• Humane Society of Greater Akron, $10,000 for its Animals Get Acquainted project;
• International Soap Box Derby Inc., $25,000 for its 75th All American Soap Box Derby World Championship;
• JA Worldwide — Junior Achievement of North Central Ohio, $4,500 for 2012-13 Summit County school programs;
• Leadership Akron, $4,000 for its XXIX Yearbook;
• Musical Arts Association — Cleveland Orchestra, $40,000 for its 2012 Blossom Festival;
• National Society to Prevent Blindness — Prevent Blindness Ohio, $5,000 for its 2012-2013 Summit County Vision Care Outreach Program;
• Ohio & Erie Canal Corridor Coalition Inc., $10,000 for its Richard Howe House Exterior Sign Project;
• Ohio Shakespeare Festival, $5,000 for a permanent stage;
• Progress Through Preservation, $6,000 for a third gift to Preservation House Restoration;
• Rape Crisis Center, $10,000 for its Sexual Assault Victim Advocacy Program;
• Rebuilding Together Summit County, $10,000 for its Safe at Home Program;
• RED Company real.edge.dance, $3,500, for its second season;
• Stewart’s Caring Place, $10,000 for 2012 children and family programs;
• Summit County Children Services Women’s Auxiliary Board, $4,000 for a contribution;
• Summit County Historical Society, $15,000 for stone wall repair;
• Tuesday Musical Club, $6,000 for its Education and Outreach Program;
• United Way of Summit County — Bridges out of Poverty Summit County Collaborative, $10,000 for its Getting Ahead component;
• University of Akron Foundation, $10,000, for its Emerging Leaders Initiative Facilities Renovation;
• Weathervane Community Playhouse Inc., $10,000 for its semi-annual newsletter and 2011-12 season;
• The Western Reserve Historical Society — Hale Farm & Village, $10,000 for its Adopt-a-School Program: Leggett Elementary School; and
• Western Reserve Land Conservancy, $5,000 for help in establishing a land bank in Summit County.
As of April 30, the market value of the foundation’s invested assets was approximately $18.8 million.
