DOWNTOWN AKRON — Local officials and residents celebrated the completion of the Towpath Trail in Summit County with a day full of events July 7.

Summit Towpath 2012 featured activities along the trail and culminated with a concert by Arlo Guthrie, shown at left, that celebrated Woody Guthrie’s 100th birthday.

Despite record-high temperatures that day, organizers said the event was a success.

“Overall, we were extremely pleased with the turnout,” said Dan Rice, president and CEO of the Ohio & Erie Canalway Coalition. “It was great to see so many people out there supporting the Ohio & Erie Canalway Towpath Trail.”

The evening event at Lock 3 Park kicked off with a parade of integral supporters who were honored as part of the Locktenders Circle. Receiving the honor were Terry Bishop, president of the Dominion Foundation; Frances Seiberling Buchholzer, Metro Parks, Serving Summit County commissioner; Allan Krulak, vice president of Forest City Enterprises; Ed Metzger, Ohio & Erie Canalway Coalition board member; Akron Mayor Don Plusquellic; and Summit County Executive Russ Pry. Those being honored are shown a right top as they make the walk with family members and other supporters from the Richard Howe House to the park.

Rice said about 2,000 people attended the concert at Lock 3, with the crowd at right bottom. Among those who enjoyed the evening was Akron resident Barbara Torosian, who is pictured at right middle as she fans herself to keep cool. Rice added that a 5K run earlier in the day attracted more than 200 runners.
