SHARON — The public took advantage of the opportunity to meet the crew and see the aircraft at an open house of the new Medina base of University Hospitals’ (UH) MedEvac helicopter held July 10.

Recently relocated from Akron, the base at Medina Municipal Airport on state Route 18 will serve the surrounding area, ensuring fast transport to area hospitals, according to UH officials. For example, the helicopter can land in the center of Barberton in seven minutes from lift-off. Arriving in the center of Norton, Copley or Richfield would take six minutes, and Bath could be reached in five, according to UH officials. To get to Sharon Circle, the helicopter ride would be just three minutes.

Between 150 and 175 people attended the open house, according to Michael Clark, business development manager for Air Methods, which operates UH’s MedEvac fleet.

The base is staffed 24 hours a day, 365 days a year with a pilot, registered nurse and medic.

Medics and nurses work 24-hour shifts, while pilots rotate after 12 hours, said medic Megan Brown.
