Republic Waste increases trash rate
LAKEMORE — Lakemore is being charged slightly more for garbage pickup, but residents won’t see an increase on their bills — at least not yet.
Council held a meeting July 16 to extend Lakemore’s contract with Republic Waste Services for village-wide trash removal at a cost of $11.89 per month, per household. The new, five-year contract will begin Aug. 1 and end July 31, 2017, Mayor Rick Justice said.
The village solicited for bids, and four waste collection companies responded, he said. Republic’s bid came in the lowest, Justice reported.
“They already have been serving us for a while and are doing a wonderful job,” he said.
Justice said it made sense to stick with Republic, despite an increase of 25 cents per month, per household.
“We are going to absorb that cost for a while and see how it goes,” the mayor said.
Republic is able to collect village trash in just two days and offers recycling, he added.
“They offer what fits our needs the most,” Councilman Troy Bradfield agreed.
Justice said Republic now is offering a 94-gallon cart for residents who would rather roll their garbage to the curb instead of taking out individual bags. Those interested in the cart should contact Republic to learn how to obtain one.
Additionally, Republic is providing the village with new recycling bins to distribute. Justice said any resident who would like to replace an old bin or begin recycling could stop by the Municipal Building, 1400 Main St., to receive one.
Also during the brief meeting, Council amended an ordinance giving previously bestowed duties of the building inspector to the zoning inspector for the village.
Council President Tammie Coontz explained the change needed to be made so the village is able to address nuisance-abatement issues by conducting the necessary inspections in a timely manner.
Council will take a summer recess in August. The next regular meeting is set for Tuesday, Sept. 4 — due to the Labor Day holiday — at 7 p.m. at the Municipal Building.
