GREEN — North Coast WAVES Unit 21 inducted into office its new leaders July 14 at the 356th Fighter Squadron restaurant. Jennifer Baun, of Boardman, became president; Marlana Robertshaw, of Boardman, vice president; Dalene Sherrod, of Akron, treasurer; and Lillian Hawley, of Wadsworth, secretary. After a swearing in ceremony, the group enjoyed a cake commemorating the 70th anniversary of WAVES and 26th anniversary of the unit.

Baun is a U.S. Navy veteran who served from 1985 to 1991 as an ocean system technician analyst and was discharged as a second class petty officer. Robertshaw retired from the Navy as a counselor after achieving the rank of first class petty officer. She completed her master’s degree in 2011 at Young State University and is now a licensed professional counselor. Sherrod was a mess management specialist in the Navy. She was stationed aboard the USS John F. Kennedy (CV-67), served from 1998 to 2002 and was discharged at the rank of third class petty officer. Hawley was discharged from the WAVES in 1955 after obtaining the rank of Seaman and was a journalist during the Korean War era.

WAVES National, established in 1979, is an organization for women who have served or are currently serving in one of the sea services. There are 78 active WAVES national units in the nation, according to WAVES Unit 21 officials. Members participate in community affairs, parades, veterans’ celebrations and other activities.
