RICHFIELD — Fireworks, music and contests will bring residents together for Richfield Community Days in the village Aug. 10-12.

Ruth Jocek, a Richfield Kiwanis member and director of the village’s Parks and Recreation Department, said the weekend summer celebration is a 40-year tradition in the community.

“We have kids who have left town who come back to see old neighbors and old friends,” Jocek said. “We had rain last year — horrific rain — yet I got responses that it was the best Community Day ever because people stayed in the tents and talked. It’s a just a great sense of community and that’s what Richfield has.”

The festivities start at the parade Aug. 10 at 6:30 p.m. The route will begin at Richfield School on state Route 303 and end at Richfield Woods Park, 4100 Broadview Road, where most activities will take place.

Following the parade, the L’ttle Miss and Mr. Richfield contest will take place for children ages 4-8. The deadline to enter is tomorrow, Aug. 3.

Music will be provided that evening by the WIXY 1260, who play music from the 1960s and ’70s, Jocek said.

Events on Aug. 11 will include the 5K Sprint and 1-mile Scamper runs, which will begin at 8 a.m. at Richfield Woods. Also, the police and fire departments will host open houses from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. The police department also will sponsor a rabies vaccination clinic for dogs and cats from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

That night will be the annual Amvets/Masonic Temple Steak Fry, which offers a steak dinner for $18 and a children’s hamburger meal for $5 at the park. Advance tickets are available at Richfield Auto Center, Exit 11 Tire Service, Jerry’s Sunoco, Richfield Recreation Center, Constantine’s, The Bake Shop in Ghent, Amvets Hall or from any Son of Amvets or Mason member.

On Aug. 12, events will get under way at 11 a.m. at Richfield Woods. There will be children’s activities with inflatables and contests.

A new contest this year is for pie baking. Pies will be judged in the categories of fruit, cream/custard and other. Pies must be kept cold until the contest and brought to the entertainment tent by 1:30 p.m. Judging will take place at 1:45 p.m.

Also, the park’s sand volleyball court once again will be used for the sand castle building contest. Residents are encouraged to form teams of six members to compete. Building may start on Saturday, and the judging will take place at 6 p.m. Sunday.

Another new event is a corn-hole tournament. Registration will begin at 2:30 p.m. behind the corn tent. Play will start at 3 p.m.

Entertainment will take place throughout the day from the Rockin Robots, the Grass Roots Cloggers, the Calypso Gypsies and Beatles tribute act The Rebeats. Fireworks will conclude the evening at dusk.
