DOWNTOWN AKRON — Summit County Councilman Tim Crawford (D-District 7) said he has decided to not pursue a job as the deputy director of the county’s Department of Law, Insurance and Risk Management.

In a telephone interview, Crawford said he plans to continue to operate his Nationwide Insurance agency in Norton. He has had the agency for 30 years, he added.

“It wasn’t going to be a smooth transition here from myself to my son, and since that couldn’t be worked out, I couldn’t accept the position with the county,” he said.

The position of deputy director has been vacant since Don Mittiga retired at the end of last year, according to county officials. Earlier this summer, Council adopted a resolution allowing the position to be filled, and County Executive Russ Pry said Crawford would be offered the job.

Jason Dodson, Pry’s chief of staff, said this week the office has not done anything further in the hiring process.

“We do intend to fill the position,” Dodson said.

Crawford, who is the most senior member of Council and the former mayor of Norton, is running for re-election this year.
