DOWNTOWN AKRON — The first Global Village Festival of Greater Akron celebrated the diversity of cultures in Northeast Ohio at Lock 3 Park Sept. 8. Visitors to the free event enjoyed performances, food and cultural booths.

Helping to make some noise at the event was Mame Daiko, a Japanese drum ensemble, shown at bottom. The audience also enjoyed a performance of Indian classical dance by Architha Dwarakanath, of Strongsville, who is pictured at right.

Berenice Arrendondo, who was visiting the area from Mexico, enjoyed shopping at a booth with handmade items from Nepal, as shown at lower right.

The event also brought diverse people together. Pictured below in the O’Hare Irish Dancers tent is Jaliyah Scott, 4, of Tallmadge, who is Muslim, as Lisa Weiland, of North Canton, paints an ice cream cone on her hand.

Organizers said they hoped the event would show that Summit County’s international and ethnic diversity is an important asset that can enrich and enlarge residents’ collective worldview.
