Green Branch Library won the award for its new sensory garden, a NatureConnect Place, located in the library’s outdoor courtyard. The garden was created in collaboration with The Friends of Green Library, Eagle Scout Mark Klein and Boy Scout Troup No. 336, according to city officials.
The garden contains vegetables and flowers and provides a habitat for birds and other wildlife, according to city officials. It also was designed to encourage people to read, eat lunch or simply observe the scenery in the garden, according to city officials.
“The joint effort to create this peaceful, public garden space really demonstrated the goal of this contest to beautify and enhance our community,” said Norton. “Congratulations to the Green Library and all involved with this project.”
The city’s Planning Department has hosted the annual beautification awards for residents for three years, and last year, the business and/or not-for-profit category was added, but none applied for the award, according to city officials.
The residential winner this year was Diane Kramanak, of Troon Drive, who won in the “water feature with landscaping” category. Kramanak’s son, Ryan, submitted the beautification application unbeknownst to his mother, according to city officials. Ryan stated in the application he “entered this contest to surprise my mom, who puts countless hours into the beautification of our home,” according to city officials.
Kramanak received a gift certificate to Hoffman’s Garden Center and a $125 donation presented in her name to Green Good Neighbors.
Norton will present a plaque to the library in early October.
“We would like to extend a very sincere ‘thank you’ to all this year’s applicants,” said Wayne Wiethe, director of planning for the city. “The effort and creativity expressed by these property owners was extremely gratifying.”
The fourth annual property beautification contest rules and applications will be available on the city’s website, www.cityofgreen.org, in April 2013.
