RICHFIELD — A ceremony at the Richfield Veterans Memorial on Flag Day, June 14, marked Richfield Village’s selection as a Purple Heart community.

Mayor Bobbie Beshara is shown above as she reads aloud a proclamation regarding the honor with Al Hamrick, commander of Chapter No. 699 of the Military Order of the Purple Heart.

Local residents that have received Purple Hearts were also called up to be recognized. They included, pictured below, from left, Larry Emery, of North Canton; Joe Zakrzewski, of Norton; Rick Stoltz, of North Canton; Hamrick; M.D. Canter, chief of the Moreland Hills Police Department; Forest Thorn, of Mogadore; and Paul Suscinski, of Norton.

Beshara said Richfield was honored because of the way the community honors the sacrifices of those who were wounded or killed in battle during wartime. Shown at right is the monument marking the recognition at the Veterans Memorial. Beshara said Richfield is one of the first Summit County communities to be honored with the designation. The village also received a Purple Heart flag, and officials plan to fly it below the village’s POW-MIA flag, Beshara said.
