Pirates invade Portage Lakes

NEW FRANKLIN — Pirates and mates weighed anchor at the Portage Lakes State Park for a day of fun at the third annual Portage Lakes Pirate Days July 19-21.The annual event, presented by the Portage Lakes Kiwanis, offered displays including Dock Dogs, games and activities such as a costume judging contest with prizes, as well as a raffle, and grub and grog. In addition, there was a hot dog eating contest, a disc golf tournament, boat rides, sailboat races, a treasure hunt and live music.

Shown at top, from left, are New Franklin brothers Brody Browning, 5, and Aiden Browning, 7, making like pirates for the occasion.

New Franklin resident Steven Decker, 7, is pictured at bottom right, all smiles after fending of a water balloon attack in another activity.

Adults also were able to take in some fun. Shown above right is Bob Kanas on Pirate Island.
