Akron Bar Foundation awards grants to local nonprofits

AKRON — The Akron Bar Foundation, the charitable arm of the Akron Bar Association, issued grants to qualified nonprofits. These grants will continue the Summit County Advocacy Program and provide life skills training to individuals who have come through the justice system. According to foundation officials, this training will increase the self-esteem and self-worth of these individuals as they assimilate back into society. 

The grants also will provide training for volunteers who work with the funded nonprofits.

The grants awarded include:

  • Battered Women’s Shelter of Summit and Medina Counties, for the Summit County Advocacy Program, $2,500
  • Bondage Breakers Inc., for services to individuals and families who have experienced a legal crisis, $8,000
  • CASA/GAL of Summit County, for training of Guardian ad Litem volunteers, $3,000
  • Community Legal Aid, for support of legal interns, $5,000
  • Law & Leadership, for assistance preparing students from under-served communities for post-secondary and professional success, $3,000
  • Rape Crisis Center, for support of their Summit County Advocacy Program, $3,000
  • Victim Assistance Program, for support of their Quality of Justice Enhancement Program, $5,000
  • Summit County Historical Society, with funds specifically provided by the Judge Judy Nicely Art Fund, for the Special Collections Division of the Akron-Summit County Public Library to update a display of the Summit County Courthouse, $3,000
  • Mental Health America of Summit County, for a program to provide equal justice for children with severe behavioral and emotional disorders by providing parent advocates to help families obtain services and benefits to which they are entitled, $5,000.
