Corbin Foundation awards grants

At its Nov. 11 Board of Trustees’ meeting, the Mary S. and David C. Corbin Foundation awarded $408,000 in grants and gifts to area charities and charitable activities. The largest award, $100,000, was made to The University of Akron for its College of Business Administration Student Success Center.

Other recipients included:

  • Access Inc., $10,000 for an Endowment/Capital Campaign Feasibility Study;
  • Act II Productions Illusion Factory, $4,000 for its Theater in Education Program;
  • Akron-Canton Regional Foodbank, $15,000 for transportation costs;
  • Akron Roundtable, $500 for a 2013 contribution;
  • American National Red Cross Summit and Portage Counties Chapter, $15,000 for its Medical Transportation Service Program;
  • The Arthritis Foundation, Northeastern Ohio, $2,500 for a 2013 contribution;
  • Beacon Journal Charity Fund, $15,000 for orthodontic treatment for Summit County children in need;
  • Bluecoats Inc. Endowment Fund, $1,000 for a 2013 contribution;
  • Boy Scouts of America, Great Trail Council, $10,000 for its Pathfinder Urban Scouting Program;
  • Building for Tomorrow, $15,000 for its Early Childhood Initiative;
  • Children’s Concert Society of Akron, Ohio, $8,000 for In-School Program artistic fees;
  • Community Outreach Resources Exchange, $8,000 for its Furniture Bank;
  • Cuyahoga Valley Youth Ballet, $10,000 for its 38th season;
  • Flashes of Hope Inc., $6,500 for its Akron Chapter Photography Program;
  • The Foundation Center-Cleveland, $2,000 for a 2013 contribution;
  • Furnace Street Mission Inc., $8,000 for its Safety Forces Chaplaincy Center;
  • Good Neighbors Inc., $4,000 for its Food Pantry;
  • The Goodwill Industries of Akron, Ohio Inc., $2,500 for a 2013 contribution;
  • GroundWorks Dancetheater, $5,000 for Summit County performances and outreach;
  • Haven of Rest Ministries Inc., $2,000 for a 2013 contribution;
  • International Institute of Akron Inc., $20,000 for Citizenship and Immigration Services outreach and support;
  • Mature Services Inc., $15,000 for its Homecare Program;
  • Mental Health America of Summit County Inc., $5,000 for its Adolescent Suicide Prevention Program;
  • Mobile Meals of Akron Inc., $15,000 for meals and medically prescribed supplements, and $10,000 for development of a Five-Year Strategic Plan;
  • National Multiple Sclerosis Society, Ohio Buckeye Chapter, $5,000 for its Equipment and Home Modification Program;
  • Ohio Presbyterian Retirement Services-Rockynol Life Care Fund, $1,000 for a 2013 contribution;
  • Opportunity Parish Ecumenical Neighborhood Ministry, $20,000 for general operating costs;
  • Portage Path Community Mental Health Center, $2,000 for new window treatments;
  • Project: LEARN of Summit County, $5,000 for the purchase of 15 loaded laptops;
  • Salvation Army and Its Components, $10,000 for its Learning Zone;
  • Summit County Children Services Caring and Sharing Fund, $500 for a 2013 contribution;
  • Summit County Children Services Graduation Recognition Fund, $500 for a 2013 contribution;
  • Summit County Historical Society of Akron, Ohio, $10,000 for educational outreach;
  • United Way of Summit County, $20,000 for its 2013 Campaign; and
  • Young Men’s Christian Association of Akron, Ohio, $25,000 for start-up costs to its Phoenix Alternative School Learning Environment and Intermission Program.

The foundation also continues to pay down its $150,000 commitment to Summa Akron City and St. Thomas Hospitals Foundation for a new confocal laser scanning microscope; its $45,000 obligation to Child Guidance & Family Solutions for its Building a Healthy Community Campaign; and its $150,000 pledge to Akron Children’s Hospital for its Building on the Promise campaign.
