SOUTH AKRON — The Akron Police Department’s (APD) annual Police Memorial Service, held this year May 7 at the Fraternal Order of Police Lodge No. 7, honored fallen officer Jonathan Russell “Russ” Long and 23 other APD officers who were killed in the line of duty and are listed on a memorial wall.

Long was paralyzed in a July 30, 1991, accident during a police chase of a fleeing subject. He used a voice machine for the rest of his life and died Aug. 15, 2013, at the age of 51 after a short battle with bladder cancer, according to APD officials.

Long’s mother, Barbara Long, is pictured at left in the photo at right with FOP Auxiliary No. 1 President Becky McDonald, standing next to a memorial wreath at the ceremony.

The solemn service included an appearance by the APD Honor Guard, pictured above, the Cleveland Police Ceremonial Unit, a presentation of flowers to family members of the fallen officers, a 21-gun salute by the Honor Guard and the playing of “Taps,” shown below.
