WEST AKRON — This summer, in addition to providing opportunities for participants to get fit and learn more about health issues through the Wellness Circles, Project Ujima is partnering with Schumacher Community Learning Center (CLC), the American Heart Association and Akron Summit Community Action Inc. to sponsor a Community Vegetable and Teaching Garden.

The garden will provide an opportunity for students, residents and friends of the Buchtel community to come together to help tend the garden and learn more about healthy eating. The garden will culminate with a Harvest Feast in the fall.

The following fitness activities are planned for upcoming Wellness Circles: July 12, yoga; July 26, line dancing; Aug. 2, West Akron Inaugural 5K Run/Walk; and Aug. 16, Zumba.

All Wellness Circles (with the exception of Aug. 2) will take place on the grounds of Schumacher CLC, 1020 Hartford Ave., under the shade of the two large trees near the corner of Greenwood Avenue and Slosson Street. The schedule of activities each Saturday (except Aug. 2) is as follows:

  • 8:30 to 10 a.m. — watering, tending, harvesting the garden;
  • 9:30 to 10 a.m. — blood pressure and body mass index checks, provided by the National Black Nurses Association, in partnership with Summa Health System;
  • 10 to 11 a.m. — fitness activity; and
  • 11 a.m. to noon — education focus (bring a blanket or chair to sit on).
