At left, a protesting osprey, who shares the feeding and nesting area, circles above. Earlier, the eagle braved assaults by the osprey.

According to the Ohio Department of Natural Resources’ (ODNR) Division of Wildlife, the osprey is classified as a threatened species in Ohio, while the bald eagle is considered a threatened species under state and federal law. The ODNR defines a species as threatened if its survival in Ohio is not in immediate jeopardy, but to which a threat exists and to which continued or increased stress would result in its becoming endangered, or potentially extinct.
