GREATER AKRON — Members of the Ohio Western Reserve Chapter of the Military Officers Association of America (OWRC-MOAA) have recognized outstanding Reserve Officer Training Corps (ROTC) and Junior ROTC (JROTC) cadets at eight local school programs.

During the past two months, OWRC members have awarded a MOAA medal to one cadet in each program at Kent State University (KSU) Air Force ROTC, KSU Army ROTC, Garfield High School Navy JROTC, University of Akron Army ROTC, Kenmore High School Army JROTC, Youngstown State University Army ROTC, Green High School Air Force JROTC and Akron East High School Marine Corps JROTC.

OWRC President retired Air Force Col. Dick Calta, of Copley, is shown at right presenting the 2009 MOAA award to KSU Army Cadet Joseph Gray at a ceremony April 22. U.S. Army LTC Ricardo Mitchell, KSU professor of military science, assists with the presentation.

“This is an excellent way to recognize student leaders for their contributions and potential,” said Calta. “It also allows us to support local communities and tell people how MOAA supports a strong national defense.”

The next OWRC general membership meeting will take place May 21 at 6 p.m. at Anthe’s Prime restaurant, 4315 Manchester Road. The cadets have been invited to be the chapter’s guests, and they will be recognized again. For details, call Calta at (330) 696-5657 or LTC Wayne King at (330) 762-7421.
