Community Legal Aid celebrates Pro Bono Week
GREATER AKRON — In celebration of National Pro Bono Week Oct. 25-31, Community Legal Aid is providing more opportunities to obtain free legal advice.
Legal Aid’s Volunteer Legal Services Program (VLSP) has organized a number of new clinics for Pro Bono Week in addition to the free legal clinics offered by Legal Aid on an ongoing basis. Citizens can participate by attending a free clinic where a local volunteer attorney can answer legal questions about debts, bankruptcy and foreclosure, divorce, custody and visitation, domestic violence, landlord/tenant issues, expungements and benefits.
Preregistration is not required for these clinics.
Events during the week in the West Side Leader’s coverage area include:
• OPEN M Counsel and Advice Clinic, Oct. 22, 5 to 7 p.m., 941 Princeton St., Downtown Akron;
• Medina County Counsel and Advice Clinic, Oct. 26, 5 to 7 p.m., Medina County United Way Office, 704 N. Court St., Medina;
• Oct. 29, 8:30 a.m. to 12:45 p.m., Akron Bar Association, 57 S. Broadway, Downtown Akron — Poverty Law 101, a free CLE for volunteer attorneys on issue identification and advising clients in a clinic setting. The event will review limited representation responsibilities at clinics and will provide a basic overview of the law in areas that are most commonly raised in the clinical setting. A celebration of pro bono week with other volunteers, VLSP staff and Akron Bar Association staff will take place from 5 to 7 p.m. Register by Oct. 23 by calling Sandra Costa at (330) 983-2622; and
• Wills for Heroes Program, Oct. 30, 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m., Sheriff’s Training Facility, 2825 Greensburg Road, Green. Wills for Heroes programs provide essential legal documentation free of charge to the nation’s first responders, including wills, living wills and powers of attorney. Fairlawn picking up bagged leaves
FAIRLAWN — The city of Fairlawn will again provide, at no charge, a bagged leaf pickup service for residents. Pickups will be on Mondays, with any leaves not collected by 3 p.m. to be picked up on Tuesdays.
Pickup days will be Oct. 26 and Nov. 2, 9, 16, 23 and 30.
The conditions for the bagged leaf pickup will be the same as in the past:
• All leaves must be placed in bags not to exceed 35-gallon capacity and must be tied securely.
• All bags must be on the curb before 7 a.m. on the pickup days.
• Trash cans will not be emptied, and items other than leaves will not be removed. Any items not meeting these requirements will be left at the curb.

Financial Wellness Week taking place Nov. 2-6
SUMMIT COUNTY — Summit County will host its first Summit County Financial Wellness Week Nov. 2-6.
The weeklong event will take place at various locations throughout Summit County. The free classes and workshops are designed to educate consumers about money management and generate awareness of the financial education services available.
Some of the events taking place in the West Side Leader’s coverage area include:
• “Predatory Lending — Buyers Beware,” Nov. 2, 6:30 p.m., Akron-Summit County Main Library, 60 S. High St., Downtown Akron. This class offered by Fair Housing Contact Service and the Ohio Civil Rights Commission will teach current and future homeowners how to avoid becoming a victim of predatory lending and what you need to know to prevent foreclosure. • Summit Buchtel Neighborhood Counsel & Advice Clinic, Nov. 3, 5 p.m., Lawton Community Center, 1225 Lawton St., West Akron. Local lawyers will provide free legal advice to those who cannot afford legal fees. For more information, call (330) 983-2513.
• “How and Why to Build a Strong Credit History,” Nov. 4, 6 p.m., Towpath Credit Union, 2969 Smith Road, Fairlawn. Participants will learn who needs to build good credit and why; about credit reports and scores; how to establish credit; how to rebuild good credit; and using credit wisely. • Foreclosure Prevention Clinic, Nov. 5, noon, The Natatorium, 2345 Fourth St., Cuyahoga Falls. This foreclosure prevention clinic is for homeowners who are experiencing an increase in their monthly mortgage payment, late in paying their mortgage payments or facing foreclosure. Housing counselors from East Akron Neighborhood Development and Neighborhood Development Services will be available to provide one-on-one counseling. • “10 Common Myths of Car Buying,” Nov. 5, 1 p.m., The Natatorium. This class offered by attorney Rocco Yeargin will teach participants about the 10 most important things to know about their next car purchase and the loan that will pay for it. For details, call (330) 643-2879;
• Financial Information & Legal Education, Nov. 5, 7 p.m., Akron-Summit County Main Library, 60 S. High St., Downtown Akron. This program offered by Community Legal Aid will cover understanding and improving credit scores, driver’s license reinstatement, expungements and identity theft. • Budgeting and Surviving Debt, Nov. 6, 10 a.m., Akron-Summit County Main Library, 60 S. High St., Downtown Akron, Room 2AB, and 7 p.m., Norton Branch Library, 3930 S. Cleveland-Massillon Road. This class offered by the Summit County Office of Consumer Affairs will help participants create a budget. A free calculator will be provided. For more, call (330) 643-2879; and
