RICHFIELD — Wesley Koewler, of Boy Scout Troop No. 387, was awarded the rank of Eagle Scout at a Court of Honor ceremony Oct. 20 at Richfield United Church of Christ.

Achieving Eagle Scout, the highest rank in Scouting, involves learning skills for living as well as service and leadership. All Eagle Scouts must complete a major service project that will benefit a church or community. The project must involve others for a minimum of 50 hours in addition to the Scout’s own time, which is mostly spent in organization and supervision.

For his project, Wesley organized and led the construction and installation of eight bluebird houses that were permanently installed in the new Eastwood Preserve in Richfield Village.

According to Wesley, Larsen Lumber supplied materials for the bluebird house project at cost, and local businesses that donated food for the volunteers included Whitey’s, Musketeers, Teresa’s Pizza, Arabica, Subway, Giant Eagle and Sam’s Club.

To reach the rank of Eagle Scout, Wesley also earned 30 merit badges, nine more than required. The merit badges were in a variety of disciplines, such as cycling, motor boating, forestry, mammal study, snow sports, fish and wildlife management, archery, hiking, reading, golf and cooking, in addition to the required categories of citizenship, first aid, camping and others. His nature study merit badges earned him the World Conservation award.

Wesley has held several leadership positions in the troop, including patrol leader, quartermaster and scribe, and has been a den chief with Cub Pack No. 3387. He has gone to  Mammoth Cave with the troop and plans to go to Philmont Scout Ranch in New Mexico next year.

A junior at Revere High School, Wesley has been a member of Student Council, Science Fiction Club and International Club. He also has volunteered at Richfield summer day camp and participated in Richfield and Revere league baseball and Revere High School lacrosse and track.

He is interested in finding cures or developing vaccines for life-threatening diseases and plans to go into premed in college and eventually into pathology, according to his family.

Wesley is the son of Laurie and Jim Koewler, of Richfield, and has a sister, Miranda, who is a seventh-grader at Revere Middle School.
